I just saw another post on drinking old kava at room temperature, and it reminded me of something truly stupid that I did last week, which I'd meant to post about at the time but forgot.
I had made a quick batch of medium grind Waka using the blender method; I had planned on doing a second wash, but I didn't have the time, so I put the root pulp in a Zip-loc baggie and popped it into my cupboard, with the intention of doing it later that night (don't ask me why I didn't refrigerate it, I couldn't tell you). I forgot about it.
A few days later, I found it, and decided to do the second wash. The pulp smelled "off," kind of fruity, and you would think that would have told me DON'T DO IT! That's just crazy talk, why waste kava? So in the blender it went, with a cup of warm water. I squeezed it out and downed it.
About 15 minutes later, I felt like utter shit. To say the least. I was disconnected, nauseated, and had a general feeling of crappiness. I thought to myself, "Lesson learned," and went to bed. I had the worst, most vivid nightmares I've experienced in quite some time, and I woke up the next morning feeling "hungover," for lack of a better word. Not like an alcohol hangover, but that feeling of anxiety and edginess. It took the better part of that day for me to start feeling right.
So, here's my advice. If you're not going to do a second wash right away, at least refrigerate the root. And if you're going to refrigerate it, don't put it in a plastic baggie, because I'm pretty sure that doing that caused some kind of reaction with the root. Just put it in a bowl and put some foil over it.
Or just do your second wash right away.
