This article was in the July 1973 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The journalist was given kava by a doctor who was testing it on rats and describes how it affected him.

Here's an article in the same newspaper from 1967 about that doctor's research. He isolated an ingredient "F-1"that he believed was responsible for calming the angry rats. F-1 = kavalactones?

Nice find! I liked in the first link where they say "But you can bet on one thing: If large amounts of it ever find their way into this country, somebody is sure to try to have made it illegal." Thank goodness that hasn't happened
