V for spelling W for pronouncing. I believe that's why it is spelled differently at times....but I'm not the smartest.

The word is originally German. They pronounce 'w' like the English 'v' (they pronounce 'v' like 'f', and there is no English 'w' sound in the language, actually: Zey haf vays off spelling zings veirdly)
